This week we are talking about acid…
No, not that kind of acid.
Hyaluronic Acid.
We see hyaluronic acid in our skincare products when companies are creating hydrating formulas but we are starting to see it as an ingredient in our haircare products. If you take care of your hair, I’m sure you have an oil in your hair care regimen. Buuuut maybe what we need is an acid?

Is hyaluronic acid the new hair oil?

First, let’s breakdown what hyaluronic acid does. In simplest terms, it holds water. All hair needs moisture for it to stay feeling soft. So putting ingredients in products that promote hydration is a no brainer. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000x its weight in water!!
THAT’S SOME HYDRATION.

Hyaluronic acid is a natural occurring acid in our bodies. However, the kind in your products are made in a lab.

Hyaluronic acid is a “hydrator”, not a moisturizer.
What’s the difference?
Well, “hydration” is the absorption of moisture while “moisturizing” is the act of trapping and locking in the moisture.
Some hydrating ingredients are hyaluronic acid, glycerin, aloe and honey. Examples of moisturizing ingredients are plant oils like jojoba, rose hip and tea tree.

Which one is more important? They are equally important! You need both because you need to add hydration and then maintain it.

Here are some great hair products that contain Hyaluronic acid you can add into your hair care routine:

Living Proof Scalp treatment

IGK Thirsty Girl

Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty Anti-Frizz Treatment

What types of hair can this work for?
ALL! All hair needs hydration because it is dead. Once your hair leaves the follicle it is dead. Which makes the common comment of “just cut off what’s dead”, pretty funny to me. Rarely do my clients mean I should shave their head.

You cannot heal hair (as some companies claim to do) but you can make it manageable and feel “healthier” by adding hydration and moisturizing it. Hyaluronic acid can create a smooth and less frizzy appearance, boost the hairs ability to hold on to moisture and improve it’s texture.

I hope this gave you a little introduction to Hyaluronic acid so next time you are buying haircare from your stylist you can ask about it! <3
