It is the season of our foundation makeup not quite matching our winter skin tones. Foundation can be expensive so the last thing we want to do is buy a whole new bottle in a different shade. This week I’m giving you some tips on how to use your current shade, even if it is too light or too dark and fix it with the makeup you probably already have!

Foundation Too Dark?

Here is what you will need:

Find your brightening concealer and use this where the lightest parts of foundation would go. Apply the foundation that is too dark as your contour shade and blend, blend, BLEND.

Speaking of blending, the applicator you use matters. A brush with condensed bristles creates more of a full coverage application while a fluffy brush will disperse the product giving a lighter application. Want even less? Try a damp sponge for a more skin like application. You can read more about brushes HERE.

Foundation Too Light?

Here is what you will need:

Cream contour or bronzer is going to be your key tool in this transformation. Your foundation that is too light will act as your highlight shade.

The technique here is all about balancing and blending. As a makeup artist one thing I was always taught is you don’t need EVERY shade in a foundation in your makeup kit. You can make ANY shade work if you have 5 to 7 shades across the entire spectrum of skin tones: from darkest to lightest. If not, keep studying color theory, learning about facial structures and how light and shadows can create depth on the face.

Wait, use concealer as foundation?

Yes. Concealer, Foundation, BB Cream, Tinted moisturizer. These only really differ in pigment concentration and finish. You can learn more about the differences in foundation HERE.

I hope this helps you think about color matching and mixing your makeup products to make them work for you <3
